Crank

Book Description
This is a story about a monster. Not a dragon or a mythological beast, but a very real, very destructive monster--crystal meth--that takes hold of seventeen-year-old Kristina Snow and transforms her into her reckless alter-ego Bree. The author based this novel-in-verse that closely examines teenage drug use on her own daughter's addiction to crystal meth. Told in Kristina's voice, it provides a portrayal of the tortured logic of an addict.

About the Author
Ellen Hopkins was adopted at birth and grew up in Palm Springs, California. After her adopted parents died, she found her birth mother. She studied journalism in college, but left school to start a family and also to start her own business--a video store. She later went to work for a small alternative press, writing stories and eventually editing. After that, she began writing nonfiction books and also continued to freelance articles for newspapers and magazines. That changed with the publication of her novel Crank, which led to a career writing novels in verse, all of which explore the more difficult situations young adults often find themselves in.
